Michael J. Sherman

Michael J. Sherman has been associated with Hoffinger Stern & Ross in its present configuration and prior ones since 1987. He has been involved in a wide range of mostly criminal but also civil matters.

Education

Mr. Sherman attended law school and was graduated (J.D.) from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1978, cum laude, and Order of the Coif.

He had previously received a Masters of Arts degree in Sociology from Georgia State University in 1975 which he attended on a fellowship to study in the area of the sociology of drug abuse.

Prior to attending the M.A. program he had been graduated, summa cum laude, from the State University of New York at Albany (1973) with a major in Psychology and a double minor in Mathematics and Computer Science and upon his graduation was admitted to Signum Laudis, the University's honor society.

Prior Experience

Soon after Mr. Sherman's graduation from law school he was appointed Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin from September 1978 through June 1979 assigned to medicaid fraud prosecutions.

In 1979 he was appointed an Assistant District Attorney of New York County where he spent seven years in the Frauds Bureau investigating and trying major fraud cases as well as other complex matters. In the mid-1980's, he played a crucial role in bringing computers to the District Attorney's Office to assist in large complex investigations.

From 1986 to 1987 Mr. Sherman headed the Compliance Department of the Coffee Sugar and Cocoa Exchange, a commodities futures exchange located in lower Manhattan, now known as the New York Board of Trade. There he oversaw the self-regulatory function of the Exchange. As such, he and his staff investigated trading violations, major and minor, by its members.

Bar Admissions

Mr. Sherman is admitted to the Bar in New York State (1980) and Wisconsin (1978), the Federal Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York as well as the Western District of Wisconsin (1978).
